Autistic man caught masturbating on MRT

Recently, a video started circulating the net of a man in his early 20s caught masturbating in the MRT train while staring at a young girl.

While the act was probably shocking to commuters who were witnessing this, many said that it was highly unnecessary to film the incident for the sole purpose of spreading it online.

This was especially so when the man’s aunt was alerted the the video and posted a lengthy Facebook post explaining that her son was Autistic and that he had the mental capability of a 10-year-old.

She further went on to add that he had been bullied as a child and that some of the acts involved masturbation which could have led to the act that was witnessed on the train.

This is the full post which has since been deleted:

The family, including the man’s mother, were distraught by the actions of the uploader and the lack of compassion that netizens had.

The man’s aunt added that her nephew had to travel long hours to get to his workplace.

Her post drew sympathy from Singaporeans. Many who felt that more needed to be done to make people aware of the experiences of people with Autism. Many also felt that the public needed to be educated with regards to what to do if they see such a thing happening.

Organisations that work with people with autism and intellectual disabilities advise people to avoid taking videos and pictures for the purpose of uploading them when they encounter behaviour like this as this can be incredibly distressing to the person and to their family members.

Rather, people should report the matter to public transport staff especially if they are unsure if the person has special needs or not.

If videos or photos need to be taken, they should only be used to hand over to the relevant authorities.

You could also help to alert members of the public that the authorities have been alerted and that the person possibly has a special needs condition. Members of the public should avoid looking or staring at the person.

Camillia is always found with a book in her hand and her phone in the other. She loves food and doesn't understand how people can "forget to eat". She will also do literally anything for a good Instagram picture.
